Hi Roberto,
I did sign with PMTM as it was a legitimate agency agreement for representation. However, given it’s limited to the Ohio market, which is really slow, I’ve applied to more local agencies and got callbacks from two: Helen Wells Agency and SCE Agency. I’m currently leaning towards signing with SCE given that I’m based in Chicago and the agent is more responsive, but wanted to run the two names by you before making a decision. Please let me know any insights on the two and what you think!
Best,

Hi Roberto,
I just had the follow-up call with PMTM and it sounds like the plan they set for me is to train me to be successful in commercial modeling. Do you mind reviewing the attached curriculum and letting me know what you think?
On another note, I’m planning to connect via another phone call with them tomorrow and want to confirm their general contract terms (commission %, exclusivity, etc.) prior to locking into the class. Would you agree that’s a good idea?
Best,
Rachel Hwang

Hello Rachel,
There are a lot of unnecessary classes on there; however, every location has its own process. It would be a good idea so you learn the ins and outs of the industry. You can ask them any questions you like as far as representation and commission.

Hi Roberto,
Thanks for the insight! That is very helpful. Just to have a proxy, how much do classes usually cost? I’m trying to gain a general sense for how much I should seriously consider investing upfront in case that comes up in the conversation.
Thanks again,
Rachel Hwang

Rachel, acting classes can vary quite a bit depending on the level, location, and instructor, but here’s a clear, realistic breakdown:
Beginner group classes: about $25–$100 per class or $150–$500 for a 6–8 week course
Monthly studio classes: typically around $150–$350 per month (once a week)
Major cities (NY/LA): often $250–$650 per month
Private coaching: around $50–$250 per hour
Intensives or high-level programs: can range from $500 to $2,800+ depending on reputation
Simple takeaway:
A normal, legit acting class is usually around $200–$400 per month
Anything way above that (like thousands upfront) should be looked at carefully

Roberto

Hi Roberto,
I’ve completed the so-called audition with PMTM yesterday and have a follow-up call scheduled with the casting director today. During our conversation yesterday, she recommended that I go through a relatively quick training/development period (I think mostly for commercial acting) of roughly 1.5 months and then hit the ground running with bookings after that. Does that sound reasonable to you? She hasn’t mentioned anything about upfront costs but I wouldn’t be surprised if she brings it up during the follow-up call today (scheduled for 4:30pm CT). I was hoping to get your thoughts on this before hopping on the call with her if possible. Would it be worth considering if they guarantee representation post-development even if it requires upfront payment? I’m also thinking of asking if there is an option to essentially “pay back” development costs as I start getting booked through them instead of paying out of pocket now. Let me know your thoughts!
Best,
Rachel Hwang

Hi Rachel,
For acting, training is definitely essential. And yes, they will charge you for classes. No one gives acting classes for free. If you are interested in doing commercial work and having a chance to book principal work, training would be suggested. If it is just modeling for photos, then it is not necessary. I have taken quite a few acting classes in the past, and it helps build confidence and get used to being in front of the camera. It helps learn how to land that job and how to adapt on camera on the fly.

Hi Roberto,
Thank you for the information. They did not mention or recommend that I take/pay for any of their classes or coaching services when I connected with a representative over the phone today. Do these types of sales-like conversations typically happen during the audition? Also, what would be the best way I can confirm representation?
Best,
Rachel Hwang

Hello Rachel,
If an agency is interested in representing you, they will clearly communicate that and provide a formal representation agreement for you to review and sign. This is typically sent via email, allowing you time to download, carefully review the terms, and return it at your convenience.
What PMTM may have conducted with you was an interview rather than an audition. Auditions occur when you are invited to be considered for a specific job. Agencies that represent you are responsible for submitting you to castings, although you may also submit yourself independently through reputable casting platforms.
Kind Regards,
Roberto

Hi Roberto,
Thanks for confirming! I have applied to a couple of agencies and projects at this point. While I am still waiting to hear back from them for the most part, I was invited to audition (virtual via Zoom) for PMTM Agency on Monday (3/23) afternoon. As this is my first audition, I wanted to let you know in case you had any tips for me!
Best,

Hi Rachel,
PMTM Agency is a legitimate, established modeling and talent agency that has been operating since 1989 and is BBB accredited. However, they follow a development-focused model, which often involves upfront fees for classes, coaching, or photos. While they do place talent, it’s important to be cautious and avoid paying for services before confirming representation. A reputable agency typically earns through commissions on work booked, not mandatory upfront payments.
Kind Regards,
Roberto
